Carl looked out the window into the dark. There was an odd light on the water.
“Alex, come look!” called Carl.
“What is it?” Alex asked.
“I don’t know,” Carl said. “Perhaps it’s a visitor!”
“I just remembered Dad has a flashlight,” said Alex. “Let’s go down to the beach and take a look.”
The boys went out of the house.
卡尔打开窗户，朝黑暗处看去，发现水上有块奇怪的光亮。
“亚历克斯，快来看！”卡尔喊。
“什么？”亚历克斯问。
“不知道，”卡尔说，“可能是一位游客！”
“我想起来了，爸爸有个手电筒，我们去海滩看一看吧。”亚历克斯说。
孩子们从房子里出去了。
“Wait!” whispered Carl. “We should talk to dad!”
“Yes, let’s go back and talk to him,” said Alex.
“Talk to him about what?” Dad called all of a sudden.
“Dad, look at the light!” whispered Alex.
“Listen!” whispered Carl. “Now I hear a woman.”
“Come on,” said Dad.“I’ll take you to the beach.”
“等一下！”卡尔低声说，“我们应该给爸爸说一声！”
“是的，我们折回去给他说一下。”亚历克斯说。
“给他说什么事？”突然间传来爸爸的声音。
“爸爸，看那灯光！”亚历克斯小声说。

The tide was high, and they could hear waves breaking gently on the beach.
“I hear a man now, too,” whispered Carl.
“What’s going on, Dad?” Alex asked, looking at the light out on the water.
“Come to the edge of the water, boys,” Dad smiled.

“Fish?” said Carl. His eyes started to become used to the light on the water. He saw two people standing in sea.
“Bob and Nell love fishing at night!” said Dad.
“We’ve been very busy. We’ve got loads of fish!” called Nell.

“Fishing at night is fun! Would you like to join us?”
“Yes, please!” called Alex.
“Fishing!” giggled Carl. “So that’s what this was all about!”

“是的，我们想！”亚历克斯说。
“钓鱼！”卡尔笑了笑，“这就是夜晚灯光的所有奥秘了！”
